Between 2011 and 2013, 5.1 million of Colombians were undernourished. By 2015 according to de Millennium Development Goals MDG, this number should be 3.4 million, it means that by next year, there should be 1.7 million people out of this statics. It means that Colombian society should do in 2 years what it did 23 years, when it went from 6.9 million in 1990 to 5.1 million in 2013. ¿How can we make it happen?

We think that we can make it happen by taking care of the children, the most vulnerable population. By 2010, there were 145.510 undernourished kids under the age of 5, and just in La Guajira 35 children die every year per every 100.000 of them. That’s what we’ve seen during the past months in media and that is what we want to stop from happening.

Our big choice is to develop a platform named NUTRIO, using technology and the help of caregivers, mainly teachers and family members, to register and geolocalize malnutrition data of the 12 million kids between 0 and 12 years old and improve their eating habits. These caregivers are our target users. We plan to have a pool of partners like, doctors, NGOs, government institutions and the private sector, who produce children related services.

We are proud to achieve the first tool in Colombia that makes it easier and more attractive for caregivers to register and record the nutritional and vaccine data of the kids under their protection. We are also thrilled about the chance to achieve a geolicalized national data base for decision makers to make best nutritional policies for children, and achieve goals like the Millennium Development Goals.

In the future we hope to integrate IOT (internet of things), quantified self and gamification principles to refine the data gathering. In addition, we hope to solve other health problems using the platform we just created.
