The Inspiration Behind NutriNotes
The inspiration for developing this app came from my mom's teachings as a nutritionist and professional chef. My mom has a kids TV show called "Cooking with Color 4 Kids" which has aired many times in New York, where she educates parents and kids on the importance of eating healthy! She inspired me to create an app that can not only track your daily calorie and nutrients intakes, but can also provide an overview of what nutrients you lack to help you understand what healthy food choices you should make on a daily basis.
What NutriNotes does
NutriNotes is a whimsical, colorful app designed to make tracking your nutrition fun, easy, and insightful! With NutriNotes, you’re not just logging meals—you’re learning exactly what goes into your body, from calories to macronutrients like protein, carbs, and fats, to essential micronutrients like vitamins and minerals. Users can set health targets, monitor progress through charts and notes, and explore a playful interface filled with illustrations of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and balanced meals.
How I built NutriNotes
NutriNotes was built as a full-stack mobile app using modern cross-platform and cloud technologies. The frontend was developed with React Native, providing a colorful interface that works on both iOS and Android. For backend services, I used Firebase to handle user authentication, real-time data storage, and cloud functions, ensuring that users’ logs, goals, and progress are stored securely and synced across devices. The app integrates with a nutrition API to fetch detailed information about calories, macronutrients, and micronutrients for any food item users log. Charts and progress visuals were implemented using libraries like Chart.js and custom animated components to make the data easy to understand and visually engaging. The entire workflow—from logging meals, receiving recommendations, to tracking progress—is powered by API requests, cloud storage, and interactive frontend components, creating a seamless, user-friendly experience that balances functionality with a playful design.
Challenges I ran into
I had challenges integrating real-time nutrition data from APIs. Designing a playful UI that remained functional took multiple iterations on Base44.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I successfully created a fully functional nutrition tracking app that is both educational and engaging. The API integration works seamlessly, and the app visually communicates complex nutrition data in a way that is easy for people who may not have knowledge about nutrition to understand.
What I learned
I learned how to integrate third-party APIs into a mobile app, manage cloud databases, and design a user interface that balances functionality with a whimsical UI aesthetic. I also gained experience in building a full-stack app workflow from logging data to visualizing progress.
What's next for NutriNotes<3
In the future, NutriNotes will have social features that allow you to connect with other users by gaining inspiration from others' fitness and dietary goals and share healthy recipes! I also plan to gamify the experience with challenges and achievements, and expand the food database for even more personalized recommendations!
