Inspiration
Getting into the fitness community as an Indian was difficult for us. A lot of what we ate were carbs and as vegetarians, we found it difficult to put on muscle even when consistently weightlifting. This led us to question why we weren’t making progress, and it turned out to be the portion sizes, with carbs overshadowing the protein content. We decided to share our discovery to fellow Indians who might be confused like we were.
What it does
Nutrindian is a website that provides free nutrition and fitness advice for Indians looking to get into fitness and working out. Our website talks about both vegetarian and non- vegetarian diets and how those affect muscle growth and fitness. We also have bodyweight and “self-made” workout options that have to do with using everyday items like ricebags and heavy backpacks as weights instead of dumbbells.
How we built it
We started with research into the best ways to gain protein as a vegetarian and combined that with recipes to build muscle optimally. We put together our findings on a document and started coding in HTML. Adding CSS for structure and Javascript for functionality, we made it scalable and visually pleasing. We then hosted it on Netify to showcase the prototype website for the hackathon.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge during building Nutrindian was the scalability. We use squares on the ‘nutrition’ tab to display links to meal recipes, and the squares would stack when we tried it on a mobile application. We decided to implement a scroller to fix this issue, as no matter how many recipes are added, the scroller will work without issue.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Nutrindian is the first website on the Internet dedicated to the guiding low-income Indian students who can’t get a membership. We offer innovative solutions to common problems like the underwhelming presence of protein in the vegetarian Indian diet, and offer alternatives to working out with the weights at a gym Everything in our website is a hundred percent free, as access to fitness and nutrition should be.
What we learned
The biggest lesson that came out of Nutrindian was to have the content ready and thoroughly proofread our findings before we started working on the code. We had to restart our development process completely just because some information was inaccurate. We also learned about increasing efficiency with the power of repetition in a website, as by using the same CSS spreadsheet for different HTML documents and simply changing the content, we maximized the amount of work we got done in a small amount of time.
What's next for Nutrindian
Currently, Nutrindian has a fixed amount of recipes and workout plans. Text-based instruction can also be very limited, as some of our users might not be able to understand exactly what an exercise tells them to do or how to perfect a recipe. We plan on implementing three things in the future to solve these two issues: customizable recipes, customizable workouts, and free consulting for high-schools done by fellow high-schoolers who are experienced in dieting and weightlifting. This could be easily implemented seeing as how we have our scrollers on the recipe pages already set up and a template for the customizable workouts planned.
