Inspiration:
We believe health starts with awareness. Just as Japan visually differentiates 100% real juice from artificially flavored juice on packaging, we aim to bring clear, visual nutrition transparency to every packaged product.
Our goal is to transform complex nutritional data into simple, intuitive visual metrics that anyone can understand instantly.
What it does:
NutriLens is a wellness technology platform that: Current Product Stage
Allows users to search for packaged food products by name. Retrieves verified nutrition data from a structured database. Extracts key nutritional values (carbs, protein, fats, cholesterol, sodium, sugar). Converts raw numbers into easy-to-understand visual metrics. Displays how each product fits into recommended daily intake.
How we built it:
NutriLens was built using Python for backend development and MySQL for structured nutrition data storage and retrieval.
We designed a system that:
Stores verified nutritional data in a structured database
Processes key nutritional values (carbs, protein, fats, sugar, sodium, cholesterol)
Converts raw numbers into visual daily-intake comparisons
Delivers fast and seamless product search functionality
The platform architecture ensures scalability, accurate data handling, and efficient query performance, allowing us to expand across brands and regions as we grow.
Challenges we ran into:
Data Collection & Verification: Ensuring accurate and standardized nutritional data across different brands and formats was challenging. Many products present information inconsistently.
Data Normalization: Converting varied serving sizes and units into comparable daily intake percentages required careful processing and validation.
Simplifying Complex Information: Translating raw nutritional numbers into intuitive, visual metrics without oversimplifying was a key design challenge.
Database Structuring: Designing a scalable MySQL schema that supports fast search, expansion across regions, and future barcode integration required thoughtful planning.
User Experience Balance: Making the interface informative yet fun and engaging while maintaining clarity was an ongoing design challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
Visual “Bubble” Nutrition Display: We successfully transformed raw nutritional data into intuitive bubble-based visuals, making it easy to instantly understand how a product impacts daily intake.
Combined Meal Analysis: Instead of analyzing single products in isolation, we built a feature that allows users to combine multiple items into a meal and view the total nutritional impact — giving a more realistic picture of daily consumption.
Simplifying Complex Data: We turned technical nutrition tables into clear, actionable insights that anyone can understand without medical or dietary expertise.## What we learned: Nutrition consumption
