Inspiration
Many people want to eat healthier but struggle to understand the nutritional information printed on packaged food products. Labels contain numbers, percentages, and technical terms that can be confusing for everyday consumers. We were inspired to create NutriLens to bridge this gap between nutritional information and informed food choices. Our goal is to make understanding food easier, faster, and more accessible to everyone.
What it does
NutriLens is a smart nutrition assistant designed to help users understand packaged food labels. Users can scan or upload a picture of a nutrition label and receive simplified explanations of important nutritional information, including calories, sugar, fats, sodium, and other nutrients.
The platform aims to transform complex nutritional data into clear, easy-to-understand insights so users can make more informed decisions about the food they consume. NutriLens focuses on promoting nutrition awareness and encouraging healthier everyday eating habits.
How we built it
We designed NutriLens around a simple, user-friendly workflow that makes nutritional information easier to access and understand. The proposed system consists of a mobile-friendly interface for capturing or uploading food-label images, an image-processing component to extract nutritional information, and an analysis layer to interpret the extracted data.
The extracted information is then presented in a simplified format that users can understand without needing specialized nutritional knowledge. The design prioritizes accessibility, clarity, and convenience, with scope for integrating AI-powered analysis and personalized recommendations as the platform develops.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was determining how to convert complex nutrition labels into meaningful information without overwhelming users. Food labels vary in layout, font size, image quality, serving sizes, and nutritional terminology, making reliable information extraction an important technical consideration.
Another challenge was ensuring that the explanations remain accurate and responsible. Nutritional values must be interpreted in context, and the platform should avoid making unsupported health claims or treating a single nutrient as the only measure of whether a food is healthy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We developed the NutriLens concept around a practical, everyday problem: helping people understand what they eat. We focused on making nutrition information more approachable rather than simply presenting users with another table of numbers.
We are proud of the platform's potential to combine food-label scanning, simplified nutritional explanations, and accessible technology into one convenient experience. NutriLens also provides a foundation for future features that could support food comparison and more informed purchasing decisions.
What we learned
This project helped us recognize that making information available is not enough; it must also be understandable and useful. We learned the importance of designing around real user needs, considering variations in image quality and label formats, and prioritizing accuracy when presenting nutritional information.
We also learned that technology can help bridge the gap between complex data and everyday decisions when usability, transparency, and responsible interpretation are treated as essential parts of the solution.
What's next for NutriLens
Our next step is to develop and improve the platform's core label-scanning and nutritional-analysis capabilities. We aim to explore AI-assisted label interpretation, personalized nutrition insights based on user preferences, and side-by-side comparisons of similar food products.
Future improvements could include support for multiple languages, clearer explanations of serving sizes and daily nutrient intake, and accessibility features for a wider range of users.
Our long-term vision is to make NutriLens a reliable everyday companion that empowers people to make more informed food choices, one scan at a time.
