Inspiration

The inspiration for NutriLens came from the desire to promote healthy and controlled eating. Many people struggle to track their nutritional intake due to time constraints or lack of knowledge. This often leads to excess calory intake which can lead to heath issues if not catered properly. Moreover, as avid gym members, we often faced issues with tracking the nutrient information and existing apps were often tedious to use. Thus we decided to build a easy to use web app to combat this issue.

What it does

Our web app allows you to upload or take a picture of a range of foods. The app analyzes the food to provide detailed macronutrient breakdowns (carbohydrates, proteins, fats etc.) and calorie information.

How we built it

We Started with brainstorming ideas with each other and ended on the idea for NutriLens. We started with working on the fronted using the React framework. We then moved onto hosting the website with express.js and node.js. In the back we then worked with API's such as Nutrionix to get the nutrient information for the different foods. Lastly, we used RoboFlow API to identify the food that was either taken by the camera or uploaded as a jpeg. express and node API calls to get nutrient information for different foods.

Challenges we ran into

There were multiple errors in the frontend and the backend. We were having trouble saving the image in the frontend and sending it to the backend. We also ran into an error when working it the API's and used Postman to debug it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we have a protype of our app and all of the skill we learned along the way. Not only the technical skills such as working with computer vision and different API's, but also the teamwork and communication skills that were tested and improved along the way.

What we learned

We learned more about some technical skills such as React, Node.js, and Express.js for web development. Furthermore, we were able to build upon our communication and collaboration skills which are crucial requirements in the work industry.

What's next for NutriLens

We believe that NutriLens has the capability to transform the health tech industry. In the future we plan to expand our model to support more diverse meals and international cuisines. We also plan on implementing additional functionalities that enable you to add allergies, personal information and more. Furthermore, we plan on launching it as a phone app to make it more convenient for our users. Overall, we intend to make our product as user friendly and easy to use for our clients, giving them the best experience possible.
