Inspiration
Malnutrition is not always about lack of food - it's often about lack of awareness, early detection, and timely action.
In many rural communities, children suffer from hidden malnutrition due to:
-Delayed health monitoring
-Limited access to nutrition knowledge
-Low-income constraints
-Frontline workers like Anganwadi staff work hard, but they rely on manual tracking and delayed assessments.
We were inspired to build a solution that empowers early detection and provides simple, actionable guidance - even in low-resource environments.
What it does
NutriGuard is an offline-first nutrition screening and guidance system designed for rural communities.
It allows users to:
-Enter child details (age, height, weight)
-Instantly detect malnutrition risk (Normal / Moderate / Severe)
-Get affordable, locally relevant meal recommendations
-Track growth over time with simple visual charts
-Use the app fully offline
The goal is simple:
Detect early, guide effectively, and prevent severe malnutrition
How we built it
We focused on simplicity and accessibility:
Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
Logic: Rule-based system using WHO growth standards
Storage: LocalStorage for offline functionality
Design: Minimal Ul with large buttons and clear visuals
We intentionally avoided heavy technologies to ensure:
Fast performance
Low device requirements
Easy scalability
Challenges we ran into
-Balancing simplicity with impact We had many ideas, but we had to narrow down to a focused solution.
-Designing for low-literacy users We simplified Ul using icons, colors, and minimal text.
-Making it offline-first Ensuring full functionality without internet required careful data handling.
- Avoiding over-complex Al Instead of unrealistic Al models, we used reliable rule-based logic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Built a fully functional offline-first prototype
-Created a clear and practical malnutrition detection system
-Designed a solution tailored for real rural constraints
-Combined health detection + actionable nutrition guidance in one platform
Most importantly:
We built something that could actually be used in real life.
What we learned
-Simplicity is more powerful than complexity
-Real-world problems need practical solutions, not just advanced tech
-Understanding users is more important than adding features
-Focus and clarity are key to building impactful products
What's next for NutriGuard
-Adding cloud sync for centralized monitoring
-Building dashboards for government and organizations unities
Our long-term vision:
A scalable, data-driven system that helps eliminate preventable malnutrition
NutriGuard is not just a tool - it's a step toward ensuring a healthy start in life.
