Inspiration
When my Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis and subsequent treatment forced me onto a restricted diet, my mom modified my favorite foods—like swapping a pizza’s maida base for roti so I could safely eat it. Her kitchen creativity made me realize that health restrictions shouldn't mean losing the joy of eating. That sparked my inspiration to build this app, automating her logic into a recipe optimizer that turns dietary limits into safe, delicious meals.
What it does
Nutricraft is an AI-powered personalized recipe optimizer that dynamically alters classic dishes to fit a user’s unique health profile and cultural lifestyle. Users can customize their settings to account for specific medical conditions (like Diabetes or PCOS), food allergies, and religious dietary preferences (such as Jain, Halal, or Kosher). When searching for a recipe, the app automatically swaps out unhealthy elements—like replacing sugar with stevia—and strips away non-compliant ingredients. If a user tries to override a healthy swap, the system triggers a smart warning alerting them to risks like high glycemic index content before allowing the change. Finally, the platform serves as an all-in-one health companion by generating automated shopping lists alongside integrated hydration and medication reminders.
How we built it
Because I did not know how to code, I built this entire app using Base44 by giving the system commands in plain English. Instead of writing traditional software, I simply typed out instructions describing how the app should work and look. The platform then turned my English commands into a fully functioning application. This approach allowed me to focus entirely on designing the health features and solving a real-world problem, rather than worrying about learning a programming language during my recovery."
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge during development was that the system required highly specific and precise English commands to build the prototype correctly. Early on, every time I gave an instruction, the AI would miss an essential detail or layout feature. To fix this, I had to treat the prototype as a continuous experiment—constantly rewriting my instructions, testing the results, and fixing errors. It took a long process of making patient, step-by-step changes to turn my ideas into the functional prototype it is right now."
Accomplishments that we're proud of
am incredibly proud that I did not let my diagnosis and drop year define my year; instead, I used that time to turn a personal hardship into a meaningful tool to help others. Even though I had no prior experience with software engineering, I am proud that I successfully built a fully functioning prototype purely by learning how to communicate with AI using precise English commands. Most of all, I am proud to have designed an app that addresses complex, multi-condition dietary needs, proving that health or cultural restrictions do not have to mean sacrificing the happiness of eating your favorite meals."
What we learned
Through this project, I learned that you do not need to know a traditional coding language to build software; having clear logic, a strong purpose, and the patience to write precise commands is what truly matters. I also gained a much deeper understanding of the daily challenges faced by people with strict health restrictions. I realized that technology can bridge the gap between medical needs and the joy of eating. Finally, building this prototype during my treatment taught me resilience, showing me how to turn a difficult personal challenge into an opportunity to create something helpful for the world.
What's next for Nutricraft
The ultimate goal for NutriCraft is to move beyond a prototype and get it into the hands of the people who truly need it in their daily lives. I want to launch the app so that patients recovering from medical treatments, or individuals managing conditions like diabetes and celiac disease, can use it every single day. My focus will be on sharing the app with health communities, patient support groups, and nutritionists to reach those who struggle with strict dietary limits. Ultimately, I want to make sure that anyone facing a health challenge can easily access this tool and finally experience the joy of eating their favorite foods again without fear.
