Inspiration

Tracking calories is pivotal for individuals trying to build and maintain proper physical and social well-being; however, popular calorie tracking applications are frequently, if not always surrounded by a form of subscription or membership, resulting in inconveniences for a simple task. Because of our past experience with previous trackers, we wanted to create something that would be that would be easy to use, efficient, and not locked behind a paywall.

What it does

This application allows individuals to swiftly input their calorie intake separated by common food categories, providing users with a simple calorie tracker, visuals breaking down an individual's caloric diversity, and a "health rating" based on inputted diets. This rating compares the inputs of the user to the recommended daily caloric intake, as well as the recommended amounts of calories per food category.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, Bulma (CSS framework), and JavaScript.

Challenges we ran into

As first-year engineering majors, many of us had never touched web development so simply getting everyone started and on the same page was a long process. Our group was composed of students who have had vastly different backgrounds and knowledges in programming languages. We had a mix of students who were better equipped for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, while others only had experience in either Python or C. We originally wanted use one of the latter languages for our back-end, but we ran the risk of not have a final submission because we didn't have any prior knowledge on connecting the two. Sticking to JavaScript, some of our team had to self-teach the language as the project moved forward.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have a working calorie tracker with our own art, designs, and visuals (charts). We're proud to have taken a "fun" approach in order to create something that we truly enjoyed.

What we learned

We learned of the nuances and teamwork required in developing a web application. We also learned to take creative liberties in order to create a counter with personality and expression.

What's next for NutriCount

We're looking to add greater flexibility and customization with regard to the food categories one's calories are apart of.
