Inspiration

I'll be honest: I was tired of juggling three different apps just to stay healthy. One for counting calories, another for workout videos, and a meditation app collecting dust on my phone's third screen. My breaking point came when I watched my roommate spend 15 minutes logging her lunch, ingredient by ingredient, only to give up halfway through. "There has to be a better way," I thought. And that's when Nutribeat was born. The idea was simple: what if you could just tell your phone what you ate, like talking to a friend? Or snap a quick photo and let AI figure out the rest? And while we're at it, why not throw in workouts and meditation too? One app to rule them all.

Challenges we ran into

Turns out, different sources disagree on how many calories are in an egg. Had to cross-reference everything and build systems to catch weird data. Still finding mistakes sometimes. The system isn't perfect but we are improving it every day.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We don't just ask ChatGPT what's in your burger and call it a day like some other apps. We actually use real nutrition databases with actual references (boring, I know, but accurate). Are we perfect? Nope. Sometimes we'll think your homemade tacos have 50 calories more than they actually do. But at least we're not like those other AI nutrition apps telling you a slice of pizza has 73.2 calories because their LLM hallucinated after reading a diet blog from 2003. Real data. Real sources. Real(ish) accuracy. It's not as sexy as 'pure AI magic,' but your body doesn't care about marketing buzzwords when it's trying to lose weight.

The Real Lesson

Technology should make life easier, not add another chore to your day. Every feature in Nutribeat exists because it removes friction, not because it sounds cool in a pitch deck. Building this taught me that the best products aren't the ones with the most features or the fanciest AI. They're the ones people actually use. Every day. Without thinking about it. And honestly? That's the whole point. Make the healthy choice the easy choice, and people will surprise you with what they can achieve.
