Inspiration & ## What it does :

I was inspired to create a tool that helps everyday shoppers make healthier grocery choices that actually fit their real budget and limited cooking time 🛒💰. I wanted to build an app that never shames your food choices, but instead offers practical, guilt-free swaps 🍎✨.

How we built it :

To bring this to life, I built the app using Next.js 💻. I used AI for the convenient stuff, like scanning your uploaded grocery receipts and writing short, friendly summaries 🧾🤖. However, I used strict, deterministic code—not AI—to calculate prices, health scores, and rules to guarantee that every single recommendation is accurate and trustworthy 🔐📊.

Challenges we ran into :

Building this wasn't without hurdles! The biggest challenge was keeping the AI in check so it wouldn't invent fake facts or prices 🛑🧠. I also had to design a smooth way for users to easily fix blurry receipt scans 📱🔍. Plus, I created a "Keep My Comfort Foods" feature so people could pin their favorite snacks without the app constantly trying to replace them 🍕❤️.

Accomplishments that we're proud of :

We are proud of building a recommendation engine that people can actually trust 🛡️✨. Instead of letting an AI hallucinate prices or invent generic diet tips, we designed a deterministic system with our Swap Promise—guaranteeing that every single recommendation is budget-safe, lifestyle-safe, and effort-safe 💸⏱️. Every swap is backed by transparent math, so users get real savings and nutritional improvements rather than empty buzzwords 📊🥗.

What we learned :

Through this project, I learned that a person's budget and free time dictate their diet just as much as pure nutrition does ⏱️💵. Ultimately, I realized that AI works best as a helpful, time-saving assistant rather than an unquestioned decision-maker pulling the strings behind the scenes 🤝💡.

What's next for Nutri-Receipt-ai :

We are excited to make adding groceries even easier by introducing barcode lookups and direct product-label scanning 📸🔍. We also plan to connect the app to live retailer APIs, which will allow us to provide exact store-specific pricing, seasonal discounts, and regional product catalogs for true real-time accuracy 🏪💲.

To make the experience more personal, we want to introduce saved dietary and household profiles so entire families can plan their shopping together 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦📝. We are also planning to expand the app's accessibility by adding multi-language options and much broader local-cuisine support, ensuring everyone feels at home using it 🌍🍛.We aim to partner with registered dietitians to deeply verify our nutrition databases and continuously improve our recommendations through user feedback loops 🩺🍏.
