Inspiration

Summer's over, that means back to school for our kids, and for us back to making lunches for them to pack in their lunchboxes every school day! We want them to have nutritious lunches they'll want to eat, so I built this chatbot which will give nutritious, tasty lunch recipes for the ingredients I have and also suitable for my kid's age.

How to use it

Simply enter the ingredients you want to use, select your kid's age, and click Get Recipe. Then to get the nutrients in the recipe, click Get Nutrients from USDA. If you have special instructions for the chatbot, you can enter them along with your ingredients. Once you have the recipe and the nutrients, you can save them to your computer or phone. If you have more than one kid to make lunch for, keep on going until you have recipes for all your kids, each specific to their age.

What's next

When I get the nutrients from the USDA, that's using the REST API provided by the US Department of Agriculture, https://fdc.nal.usda.gov. This API is limited to returning nutrients for 100 grams of a given food, it doesn't let you specify the actual weight of the food, which may be greater or less than 100 grams in the recipe. In the next version of this chatbot, I will recalculate the USDA nutrient values based on the actual ingredient weights in the recipe, which will be a cool enhancement, right?
