Outline
Nutri seeks to help Americans improve their diets and reduce food waste. Countless people are starving, as millions of pounds of produce are said to have “expired” and thrown into the landfills. Nutri’s purpose is to transform how customers interact with the food industry and build on the push for more environmentally friendly practices. The data gathered by Nutri can inform future innovations in food production, distribution, and waste management, leading to more efficient and sustainable food systems. Food waste contributes to 8-10% of global unnecessary greenhouse gasses, also resulting in a $1 trillion loss annually. Our innovation falls under the Innovation Track and the Best Beginner Hack, Best Sustainability Hack, Best Healthcare Hack, and Best Failed Hack. We developed a demo app utilizing Figma to display the functions of NutriApp. NutriTag (biodegradable barcode tag) for produce and NutriScan (barcode scanner + CV food detection) coupled together allow consumers and grocery stores to track the lifespan of their product. The NutriApp will keep track of produce with the NutriTag and other food scanned by users and placed in a refrigerator. Sensors that detect volatile organic compounds emitted by spoiling food are installed into the refrigerator that are connected to the Nutri app. Using an AI algorithm to analyze the various levels of odors measured by the sensors, the NutriApp will calculate the specific item in the fridge that is nearing its expiration date and send an alert to all users of the fridge. Because the fridge keeps stock of all the food inside, it can give recommendations on recipes for the near-expiration food. NutriTaste is a recipe book part of the NutriApp that is designed to have all the products in your fridge listed and an adjusted recipe book. For ethical considerations, Nutri uses biodegradable products while reducing food waste through a secure and collaborative IoT ecosystem.
