Inspiration
It’s well known that certain diets can have a negative impact on the environment. For example, red meat is known to lead to a significantly higher carbon footprint than say vegetables, mainly because it creates more food waste. In fact, beef alone accounts for 34% of food-related carbon emissions. After learning about this, we decided to build an app that will help lower carbon emissions and promote a healthy diet.
What it does
We prototyped an app that allows a user to upload a picture of their meal and then the app will run it through a machine learning algorithm to determine how much food waste was produced and the overall carbon footprint of the meal and how nutritious it is. To make it as interactive as possible for the user, we’re using a dolphin animation to provide them insight into these statistics. If they repeatedly consume food that’s unhealthy and bad for the environment, the health index will decrease while the pollution index will increase.
How we built it
Our app was prototyped using Figma. In addition, we tried to flesh out the machine learning algorithms in Python, but they aren’t included here.
Challenges we ran into
It took us a while to figure out an idea and we didn’t have enough time to build a functional app. In addition, it was difficult to find the data for the machine learning algorithms.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a solid prototype of the app and have the design figured out and should be ready to develop it.
What's next for Nurture Your Dolphin
We’re going to build a full-stack app, likely in Android or iOS, and develop the machine learning algorithms in Python and integrate them in. We’re also planning on using reinforcement learning to help the app give more accurate measures as more people use it.
