Inspiration

Shrinkflation often goes unnoticed because the price on a product may stay the same while its quantity quietly decreases. We wanted to make these hidden price increases visible and help consumers understand the true value of what they’re buying.

What it does

FairTradeAI detects shrinkflation by comparing a product’s price, quantity, and historical data. It identifies when companies reduce product quantity without a proportional price reduction and presents the change in a simple, easy-to-understand way.

How we built it

We built FairTradeAI using AI-powered analysis, product data, and a user-friendly web interface. The system processes product information, compares historical price-to-quantity ratios, calculates the effective price increase, and highlights potential shrinkflation.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was dealing with inconsistent product data across different time periods and packaging sizes. We also had to design the analysis so that genuine price changes could be distinguished from changes caused simply by different product variants or quantities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to have turned an often-hidden consumer problem into something measurable and understandable. FairTradeAI makes it easier to see how much a product’s real cost has changed, rather than relying only on the price displayed on the shelf.

What we learned

We learned how to combine AI, data analysis, and a consumer-focused interface to solve a real-world problem. We also learned that presenting complex data in a simple and actionable way is just as important as the underlying technology.

What's next for FairTradeAI

We want to expand FairTradeAI with real-time product scanning, larger historical datasets, supermarket integration, price alerts, and personalized shopping insights. Eventually, users could simply scan a product and instantly see whether they’re getting a fair deal.
