Inspiration
Our inspiration stems from personal experiences where we faced feelings of shame and abandonment when it came to learning and dealing with STIs. These feelings are the very first obstacles to seeking help and bringing awareness about the resources available. In our research, we discovered the lack of knowledge that people have on the topic of STI through problem-discovery interviews conducted with friends. In addition, CDC states that about 60% of STI cases are asymptomatic. There's also a decrease in workforce and resources since COVID-19. It is due that these assets have been allocated to deal with the pandemic.
From these findings, we identified one key element to solve the problem, which is education through open conversation.
What it does
Our platform is a voice-activated AI tool that is capable of patient triage and preliminary diagnosis through image scanning. Most importantly it is capable of conversing with the patient in multiple languages to answer any question and to educate on STI. It has real-time information about available resources and can provide advice.
How we built it
Challenges we ran into
We are worried about the privacy of the data since our platform is voice-activated, it might make the patient uncomfortable to talk about STIs. We were also worried that providing pictures of their symptoms could be over the comfort level of the patients. However, after consulting with a healthcare professional among the judges, we. learned that people are actually overly comfortable with sharing these private pictures.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have tested the platform on our cycles and they stated that the use of the platform was very interesting and they felt comfortable since they were able to make a dialogue from their home. Even if our platform is far from perfect, we received positive user feedback and statements that they would use the platform on a regular basis.
What we learned
Our platform needs more training to better understand STI symptoms and interact with patients more accurately. We also learned that our avatar's appearance matters in setting the comfort level of the patient. So we switched the avatar's appearance look from a business sharp to a more wholesome yet professional look.
What's next for Nursable.Ai
Our AI tool needs more training for punctuality. In addition, we need to start to reach out to entities that engage the most with high-risk groups of STI. These groups include people aged between 18-24, sex workers, LGBTQ+, and back or Hispanic communities. In addition, we need to do more solution-testing interviews.
