Inspiration :

Ironically, I was once affected by the same problem that Alethia AI is designed to solve. Like many students, I sometimes used generative AI tools to solve mathematics problems because getting an answer was faster than working through the problem myself. Over time, I noticed that although I was completing tasks more easily, my understanding and exam performance were declining. I also saw students relying on AI for assignments, applications, and academic work without fully developing their own skills. This made me question whether AI was helping us learn or simply helping us finish tasks. I began researching the impact of AI dependency on learning and critical thinking, while also exploring educational approaches that encourage deeper understanding. During the hackathon, my team and I discovered the Socratic Method and realized that combining it with AI could transform AI from an answer provider into a thinking guide.

What it does :

Alethia AI is a Socratic AI mentor that helps learners think rather than simply receive answers. Instead of providing direct solutions, Alethia guides students through personalized Socratic conversations using questions, reasoning prompts, and reflections. It adapts to each learner's academic level, interests, and abilities, helping them discover answers independently. By encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-learning, Alethia transforms AI from an answer generator into a learning partner that helps students build lasting understanding and intellectual independence.

How we built it :

Alethia AI is designed as a Socratic mentor rather than a traditional chatbot. The system first considers the learner’s academic level, interests, strengths, and background. Using this information, it adapts the complexity of its questions and guidance to fit the learner’s needs. Instead of providing direct answers, Alethia engages users in personalized Socratic conversations, guiding them through questions, reasoning prompts, and reflections that help them reach conclusions independently. Once learners arrive at a solution, Alethia provides feedback and confirms whether their reasoning is on the right track.

Challenges we ran into :

Our biggest challenge was technical implementation. Although we strongly believed in the problem and solution, we initially lacked confidence in our ability to build the project. Rather than giving up, we explored different tools, learned new skills, and continuously experimented until we successfully developed a working prototype. This experience showed us that technical limitations should motivate learning rather than prevent innovation. As a result, our team became even more motivated to continue studying programming, artificial intelligence, and technology development in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of :

We are proud of addressing a real problem that we personally experienced as students: the growing dependence on generative AI for answers instead of learning. Despite our limited technical experience, we successfully transformed an idea into a working prototype by learning, experimenting, and overcoming technical challenges as a team. Most importantly, we are proud that Alethia focuses on developing thinkers, not just providing solutions.

What we learned :

Through this project, we learned how Socratic learning encourages reasoning, curiosity, and independent thinking. We also learned that technology should support human thinking rather than replace it. Beyond education, we learned how to turn an idea into a working prototype despite having limited technical experience by using modern tools creatively and efficiently.

What's next for ALETHIA :

Our goal is not to build an AI that gives more answers, but one that helps people think better.Future plans include interactive 3D learning models, spaced repetition for long-term memory, virtual science labs, and a Teach Back mode where students explain concepts in their own words. We also aim to introduce a Debate Mode and tools that measure the growth of critical thinking, not just academic performance. Ultimately, we want Alethia to become an AI mentor that helps learners become more independent, curious, and capable thinkers.
