Inspiration
We were inspired by a simple question: What if our dogs could tell us what happened during their day? Dogs cannot directly tell their owners when they feel different, when their routine changes, or when something may be wrong. Although existing pet wearables can collect information such as location and activity, this information is often presented as disconnected numbers and charts. We wanted to create a more natural way for owners to understand their dogs by combining AI, health data, activity history, and a personalized 3D dog avatar. This led us to create NuNuPulse, a platform that transforms a dog’s everyday data into meaningful insights and interactions that can help strengthen the relationship between dogs and their owners.
What it does
NuNuPulse creates a personalized digital experience for each dog by combining a smart collar, AI agents, health monitoring, GPS tracking, activity history, and a 3D dog avatar. When users first join the platform, they can upload photos of their dog, allowing NuNuPulse to recognize the dog’s breed and create a personalized 3D avatar that represents the dog throughout the platform. Owners can then interact with the avatar through an AI-powered conversation system and ask questions about what their dog is doing, how their dog has been feeling, or what happened during the day.
NuNuPulse also creates an individualized health profile based on information such as the dog’s age, weight, size, breed, and medical history. The system analyzes this information together with daily activity and nutrition records to establish a personalized baseline and identify meaningful changes over time. Based on these patterns, NuNuPulse generates daily health reports and personalized suggestions for the owner. Owners can also ask health-related questions, which are answered through specialized AI workflows that combine the dog's personal information with relevant health and veterinary knowledge.
In addition, NuNuPulse uses GPS data to show the dog's real-time location and daily movement history. Owners can create customized activity zones and receive alerts when their dog leaves a designated area. The platform also turns movement data into visual activity routes and statistics, allowing owners to understand not only where their dog went, but also how active the dog was throughout the day. NuNuPulse can further transform locations into memories by recognizing places that the dog visits and building a visual history of the dog's experiences.
How we built it
We built NuNuPulse by combining AI agent workflows (longchain, chatgpt), wearable sensing (IMU), data visualization (plotly), GPS technology, and 3D modeling into one integrated platform. We designed different long-chain AI workflows for different tasks so that each agent can collect information, retrieve relevant knowledge, analyze data, and generate a response based on the dog's specific context. For example, the health workflow can combine the dog's personal health history with activity and nutrition data before generating a personalized recommendation.
We also designed a personalized 3D dog avatar that serves as the main visual connection between the owner and the dog's digital information. Instead of requiring owners to interpret complicated datasets on their own, the avatar provides a familiar and engaging way for owners to interact with their dog's information. We connected the avatar with the AI conversation system so that the dog can become a more natural interface for communicating information.
For the health system, we designed the platform to consider each dog's individual characteristics and establish a personalized baseline rather than applying the same standard to every dog. For the GPS system, we transformed raw location data into real-time maps, activity routes, safe zones, alerts, and location memories so that the data becomes easier for owners to understand and use.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was figuring out how to make a large amount of health and activity data feel simple and meaningful to the owner. A dog can generate information about its location, movement, nutrition, health history, and daily behavior, but presenting all of these metrics separately can quickly become overwhelming. We therefore had to rethink the experience around a more human-centered question: What does my dog want me to know today?
Another challenge was integrating multiple AI capabilities into one coherent experience. The chatbot, health recommendation system, image understanding system, GPS system, and 3D avatar could easily feel like separate features, so we focused on connecting them through the same personalized dog profile and AI agent system. We also had to consider how to provide useful health insights without presenting the system as a replacement for professional veterinary care.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that NuNuPulse goes beyond the traditional smart collar model by connecting physical sensing with AI and an interactive digital representation of the dog. We created a system in which information can flow from the physical dog through sensors and data collection into AI analysis and finally into a personalized 3D avatar that communicates with the owner.
We are also proud of bringing different aspects of a dog's life into one platform, including health, activity, nutrition, location, daily routines, and memories. Instead of treating each metric as an isolated piece of information, NuNuPulse is designed to build a continuous picture of the dog's life and help the owner understand changes over time.
What we learned
Building NuNuPulse taught us that the most important part of an AI product is not simply generating an answer, but understanding what information matters, when it matters, and how that information should be presented to the user. We learned that meaningful personalization requires context because the same activity level or behavior can mean different things for different dogs depending on their breed, age, size, medical history, and normal routine.
We also learned that AI can be more than a chatbot because it can serve as an interface that connects information from multiple sources. Instead of requiring users to search through different databases and dashboards, an AI agent can combine information and communicate the result in a more natural way. Most importantly, we learned that technology becomes more meaningful when it strengthens an existing human relationship, and in our case, that relationship is between a dog and the person who cares for it.
What's next for NuNuPulse
Our next step is to develop NuNuPulse from a prototype into a continuously learning companion that can build a long-term understanding of each individual dog. Over time, the system will be able to learn what is normal for a specific dog and identify meaningful changes in its activity, behavior, and health patterns.
We also plan to integrate additional wearable signals, more advanced activity and behavioral recognition, richer nutrition tracking, and more specialized veterinary knowledge into the AI system. At the same time, we want to make the 3D avatar more expressive so that it can reflect the dog's real-world activities and provide owners with a more intuitive way to understand their pet.
Ultimately, our vision is to make NuNuPulse more than a monitoring platform. We want every dog to have a digital story that helps its owner better understand, care for, and connect with them.
