Inspiration
The idea started as a simple number-based puzzle, but evolved through several stages as we experimented with different mechanics and ways of making the game more interesting. We kept refining the concept until we reached the current combination of numbers, traffic lights, and teleporters.
What it does
Numen is a grid-based number puzzle where players move from field to field, using numbers and special elements to find the correct path. Traffic lights affect movement, while teleporters can completely change your position on the board. The goal is simple: figure out the rules, plan your moves, and reach the destination.
How we built it
We started with the core movement and number mechanics, then gradually introduced new elements and tested how they changed the gameplay. Each iteration helped us remove unnecessary complexity and focus on the mechanics that made the puzzles more fun and challenging.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between simplicity and depth. The rules needed to be easy to understand, while the combinations of different elements still had to create interesting puzzles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of how much the original idea evolved. What started as a basic concept turned into a game with its own identity and a flexible system that can create many different puzzle situations.
What we learned
We learned that small changes to a simple mechanic can completely change how a puzzle feels. Iterating quickly and testing different combinations was key to finding the current version of the game.
What's next for Numen: The Number Puzzle
The next step is to expand the number of mechanics and puzzle types, while keeping the core gameplay simple. We also want to explore level progression, increasingly complex combinations, and ways to make each new level introduce something interesting without overwhelming the player.
