My inspiration was myself. I'm a feminist. I am from India, privileged enough to be born in a metro, have good education and financial control of my own life. However only miles from where I stay are the women of the Mumbai slums. Technically, on paper they have all the rights, their choices are however deeply curtailed by the patriarchy's power around them. Recently in the hinterlands of Uttar Pradesh, a young woman who was raped and butted to death by four upper caste men, was burned hurriedly in the middle of the night (note that according to Hindu rituals a cremation occurs in the early morning only), by state agents to protect the perpetrators. We, the empowered women were left watching as we realized there is a lot still to be done when it comes to equality. I lose track of women's rights issues I'm tracking, I like looking up femicide and rape news to track how states perform across the world. I would like to track petitions, initiatives and grassroot organizations working for women, especially since the covid pandemic has resulted in mass violence against women, in their homes, on the streets and even in covid wards.
What it does
Feminist Action Board subscribes to a news api to provide realtime news about rapes, femicides and broader gender violence. It has a stats board that is updated with some of the info updated by agencies. It tracks organizations, petitions and initiatives.
How I built it
I used a react basic template and relied on third party APIs to give me the right information by just plugging in the data.
Challenges I ran into
Some of the APIs I tried early on had data that was too complex to feed into a basic react front-end. There was a lot of trial and error involved in the process. In case of petitions I discovered that change.org had discontinued their existing APIs. So I had to hard-code some values for the demo.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud of the application as a whole, especially the idea.
What I learned
I re-learned React considering it has updated quite a lot since I last tried it.
What's next for Feminist Action Board
I want to add donation tabs, stats according to countries, etc. I also want to be able to write a good API layer for sites like change.org to give the right data to my users.
How it will create change?
By keeping feminists aware of exactly what needs to be actioned on, this action board creates a level of organization for the global network of feminists. It will help on ground issues gain international attention thus preventing violation of human rights. It will help petitions get organized focus and help grassroot organizations gain the recognition they deserve.
