Inspiration

Growing awareness about mental health showed the urgent need for accessible, stigma-free support tools. Many people struggle to find a friendly listener or track their emotional state. Inspired by this, we created Numa — a personalized AI mental health assistant to provide daily mood tracking and empathetic affirmations that anyone can access anytime.

What it does

Numa interacts with users in a conversational way, asking about their day and mood. It tracks mood entries, analyzes trends, offers motivational or soothing affirmations, coping tips, and flags urgent mental health concerns with caring advice. Users can personalize their experience with anonymous mode and preferred reminder styles.

How we built it

We built Numa in Python using basic text inputs and outputs for smooth user interaction. Core features include mood trend analysis, keyword detection, and user customization handled by conditional logic and random selection. The app runs effortlessly in Google Colab or any Python environment, making deployment and testing simple and accessible.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing feature richness with simplicity was a key challenge, especially under time constraints. Implementing mood trend analysis logically and creating meaningful personalized responses tested our iterative development skills. Ensuring a natural conversational flow in a CLI-based app also required careful design and repeated testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully integrated mood trend tracking and customizable settings allowing users to personalize affirmations and preserve privacy with anonymous mode. The chatbot’s empathetic responses and urgent keyword alerts create a supportive experience. Developing a well-structured, tested, and deployable open-source project from scratch is a significant achievement.

What we learned

This project deepened our understanding of user-centered design, emotional intelligence in tech, and Python’s capabilities for text-based AI applications. We honed iterative coding and debugging skills and grasped how simple algorithms can meaningfully support mental health.

What's next for Numa

Future plans include adding persistent data storage for long-term mood tracking, integrating sentiment analysis for richer conversational understanding, and expanding to web or mobile platforms. We aim to make Numa more accessible and help more people benefit from personalized mental health support worldwide.
