Inspiration

Before we developed Nulla, we were already concerned about the state of the world we live in. Stories of huge garbage patches in the oceans causing the death of countless marine life inspired us to make a change. As people who are very competitive ourselves, we immediately understood that creating a competitive platform for recycling could have an amazing impact on the world as a whole. Our mission is to inspire others around the world to join in making the world cleaner.

What it does

Nulla introduces a competitive factor to recycling by allowing people to compete on a worldwide leaderboard. When someone takes a picture of themselves recycling an object, they recieve points that will place them on a leaderboard. The top recyclers have chances to win awesome prizes! We plan to implement photo recognition to Nulla to make the whole process more legitimate and easy.

How we built it

We built Nulla by first designing and prototyping it on Figma. Figma allowed us to envision what the website would actually look like, as well as test some of the features using prototypes. We then moved to creating the actual site using HTML5 and CSS. We styled many of the things that we couldn't do on Figma with CSS, and we are very happy with the way our site turned out. We plan to implement a camera system in the future.

Challenges we ran into: '

A couple of challenges we ran into were formatting the pages to fit the screen and the linking of pages using the navigation bar. At first, we used Figma to design the UI and the home page of our website, but it did not fit the entire screen when we tested it on our repl.it. We used trial and error with various screen resolutions, and with the help of our mentor (Aditi), we were able to eliminate the overflow and fit the page to the screen so that we didn't have to scroll side to side. Later on in our hackathon adventure, we were trying to figure out how to navigate between our pages. We brainstormed with our mentor and came to the solution of using a-tags in html for class references. Since our class names were not standardized, this was somewhat of a challenge, but not one we couldn't overcome. @here should i talk abt figma

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Accomplishments we're proud of: We are very proud of this website that we designed and constructed in less than just 6 hours. The purpose of the website is the thing we are most proud of as we see it as a way to help humanity gain awareness of their footprint on the natural world

What we learned

We had an amazing experience putting together this website. We learned how to code in html, javascript, and css as well as compile a website using inter-communicating files

What's next for Nulla

Our goal is to expand Nulla to an International audience to help natural ecosystems across the planet. To do this, we will need to scale up the functionality and backend capacity of our app/website. As mentioned in the pitch video, we plan to implement object recognition technology like AWS Recognition into our app to automatically credit points to users rather than having a staff member manually do it. Additionally, we wish to make partnerships with more local businesses and recycling centers to be able to offer larger rewards for using our service to attract a larger audience. Finally, we wish to expand our services to just being able to recognize recycling to any environmentally friendly act which would ensure our planet’s safety for generations to come.
