Inspiration
We know firsthand how difficult it can be to stay on task, and it's a struggle that many of our friends and peers also face. That’s why we decided to create a solution that keeps you motivated and accountable in a fun, interactive way. What better way to stay focused than having a little companion encouraging you to stay on track?
What it does
Nuggetmon is your personal productivity companion that helps you stay focused and on task. It’s a desktop app that uses the Pomodoro technique and window tracking to monitor your productivity. You earn nuggets for staying focused and lose them if you get distracted. We provide real consequences to keep you engaged and motivated; your companion gets progressively upset when you slack off—so much so that if you anger it too much, it will leave you forever :(
As you continue to work, you'll earn nuggets that you can spend to unlock a variety of new companions. You can collect them all while staying productive!
How we built it
We used the Electron framework to build Nuggetmon, utilizing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the app’s functionality and interface. However, most importantly, we built Nuggetmon with all our care and love! :D
Challenges we ran into
Version control was one of our biggest hurdles. With overlapping responsibilities across the team, we faced merge conflicts that were sometimes tedious to resolve. Despite this, our team worked together to overcome these issues and keep the development process moving forward. Delegating tasks to each person and prioritizing the most important features was crucial to making a successful product for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of how we were able to collaborate. We came together as a team, leveraging everyone’s strengths and learning from each other along the way. Additionally, we created a very creative, fresh, fun way to gamify productivity that we think is very unique.
What we learned
Everybody on the team learned a lot during the time of this hackathon. With moderate JavaScript experience, Ethan took on the challenge of implementing window tracking. He faced difficulties but is proud to have successfully figured it out, and has learned a lot more about using JavaScript. Tyler, Eric, and Angela had limited JavaScript experience at the start, but have gained a lot more confidence in their coding abilities through hands-on learning and collaboration. Overall, everbody has learned much more about making desktop apps.
What's next for Nuggetmon
We have a lot of ideas moving forward, most notably:
- User statistics & Nuggetdex: We’ll track users’ progress and add a Pokédex feature for companion collection.
- Evolving Pets: We plan to introduce a system where companions can evolve as users complete more tasks.
- Cloud Storage: Cloud technology will enable us to store user pets and stats across devices.
- Leaderboards: Last but not least, we are hoping to allow for competition with friends through a leaderboard.
