Navigating NYC as an immigrant is tough. Between complex bureaucracy, language barriers, and scattered information, it is easy to feel lost. Latino communities across Latin America rely heavily on strong, neighbor-to-neighbor support networks, and NYC operates the same way across its five boroughs. Seeing families struggle to find legal aid, food assistance, and local support inspired us to build NuestroNYC. We wanted to create a simple, welcoming platform that covers not just immigration tools, but the community aid that brings people together.
We built NuestroNYC on Base44 as a multilingual resource hub. To connect people with local support, we added map-based locators covering all five boroughs for legal aid, food pantries, emergency resources, and neighborhood events. We also created two core tools:
- Luz: An AI assistant that explains complex information in a user's native language.
- Mi Camino: A progress tracker that helps families organize paperwork and track important deadlines.
Our main challenge was making a feature-packed platform feel easy and approachable rather than stressful or bureaucratic. Making Luz's language translation feel natural and culturally clear took a lot of tuning. We also had to figure out how to balance sensitive document tracking in Mi Camino with surfacing lighter, hyper-local community events without cluttering the user interface.
Building this taught us that technology works best when it reflects how people actually help each other in real life. We learned that legal tools and document trackers are only half the battle. By combining practical preparation tools with local community resources, we can turn an overwhelming system into a clear, connected path forward for families in NYC.
