Inspiration

I wanted to make SAT tutoring accessible to students who may not have a laptop or want to install another app. Since millions of students already use WhatsApp every day, I wondered: what if high-quality AI tutoring could simply live there?

What it does

Nudge is an AI-powered SAT tutor that runs through WhatsApp. It delivers adaptive practice questions, identifies why a student answered incorrectly, provides grounded explanations, tracks learning progress over time, and flags students who may need extra support from a teacher.

How I built it

I built Nudge using Next.js, Twilio WhatsApp, Gemini, and MongoDB Atlas Vector Search. Gemini analyzes student reasoning, while MongoDB Atlas retrieves relevant SAT content to ground explanations. A teacher dashboard visualizes weak-topic trends and intervention alerts.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was designing a conversational tutor that could understand a student's reasoning instead of simply grading answers. I also had to build reliable context management and ensure AI responses stayed grounded in trusted SAT learning material.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of building an AI tutor that feels natural inside WhatsApp while going beyond traditional chatbots by diagnosing misconceptions, delivering personalized explanations, and helping teachers identify students who need support—all as a solo developer.

What I learned

I learned that impactful educational AI isn't just about using large language models—it's about making learning accessible, providing meaningful feedback, and designing around the tools students already use.

What's next for Nudge

I plan to expand Nudge beyond the SAT, support more curricula and languages, add voice-based tutoring for accessibility, and enhance the teacher dashboard with deeper learning analytics and intervention insights.
