Inspiration

In 2026, the freelance landscape shifted. As AI began to outperform humans in traditional tasks, I faced a profound realization: One day, AI might replace our "jobs," but it can never replace our "purpose." When we no longer have to work to survive, what defines us? I believe the answer lies in self-accomplishment and recognition. We need to create, to learn, and to share. I built Commis to turn passive content consumption (watching cooking videos) into active human achievement (creating a masterpiece in the kitchen). It’s not just an app; it’s a tool to prove that humans still have a delicious role to play in an AI-driven world. 😔 -> 👨‍🍳

What it does

Commis bridges the gap between digital inspiration and physical creation. It takes any YouTube cooking short and transforms it into a structured, interactive roadmap.

  • Instant Parsing: Gemini analyzes video content to extract ingredients and steps.
  • Smart Ecosystem: One tap turns ingredients into a Reminders-based grocery list.
  • Celebration of Craft: Finally, users generate a "Chef's Kiss" accomplishment card to share their victory with the world.

How we built it

The project was forged in the heat of Google's AntiGravity IDE. By leveraging the multimodal capabilities of Gemini, we bypassed traditional transcription limits. The app is built natively with SwiftUI, utilizing EventKit for Reminders integration. The monetization engine is powered by RevenueCat, enabling a seamless 3-tier subscription model from day one.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, I planned to rely on video subtitles. However, I soon realized that many high-paced cooking shorts lack detailed instructions in their captions. Eitan’s brief reminded me that cooking is visual.

The breakthrough came when I realized Gemini could analyze the video stream directly via a link. Moving from "Text-to-Recipe" to "Visual-to-Recipe" was our biggest technical hurdle and our most significant "Aha!" moment.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Vision Integration: Successfully implementing multimodal video parsing that feels like magic.
  • User Agency: Creating an experience that prioritizes user achievement over passive consumption.
  • Resilience: Pushing through quota limits and late-night bugs to ship a functional, monetized MVP in under 48 hours.

What we learned

Technology, especially AI, moves faster than fear. It’s always worth exploring the "impossible" before accepting defeat. Even if a feature seems out of reach today, the rapid evolution of models means a solution is often just days away. Don't let self-hindrance stop you from building the future.

What's next for Commis

We are preparing for our App Store debut with a roadmap focused on deep personalization:

  • Calorie & Macro Analysis: Real-time nutritional tracking.
  • AI Substitutes: Suggesting ingredients based on user dietary needs.
  • The Gallery of Masters: A social space for users to showcase their culinary journey.
  • Voice-Activated Navigation: A truly hands-free experience for the busiest kitchens.
