Introducing... Nudge

There are so many decisions we need to make in a day. What are we going to eat? How will we approach this homework question? What am I going to wear tomorrow? Faced with an insurmountable amount of decision fatigue and associated stress, college students and young adults often turn towards mindlessly scrolling on their phones during their free time. As a result, they may disregard joyful hobbies, procrastinate important tasks, and forget about activities that can improve their mental health.

With Nudge, users will be redirected from their endless, often overwhelming scroll sessions and encouraged to engage in meaningful activities or reminded of tasks they’ve been putting off. Inspired by the overwhelming and all-consuming world of tech, we’ve designed an app that guides users to make phone-usage choices that serve their mental health, using AI to provide ideas for other activities. As technology advances and redefines how we live our lives, we want to ensure our users remember what’s important to them beyond their screens.

How does Nudge work?

While there are many screen-time tracking and reminder apps on the market, none implement attention redirection, and many impose strict blocks and time limits on apps. Nudge prompts gentle reminders to users once they’ve been on a distracting app for a certain period of time. These reminders serve as friendly wellness check-ins for users and allow them to decide whether they want to be redirected to an alternate activity. If the user wants a suggestion, they will be directed to the Nudge app, where they will select how they are feeling in the moment and receive offline or productive activities tailored to assist with their current mood.

Nudge users will also be able to add various mindfulness activities to different toolboxes based on their mood. For example, they can add activities to help them refocus, destress, or cultivate happiness. Users’ self-added tools will be supplemented with personalized AI suggestions for activities and tools, which they may also opt to add to their personalized toolboxes. Nudge will also provide mindfulness tips and techniques backed by psychological research, and tutorials for new skills or activities in the users’ toolboxes.

Nudge will also encourage productivity by allowing users to input short-term tasks and long-term goals into the app, which our app will also suggest based on users’ moods. Users can integrate apps like Google Calendar, Notion, Asana, and Canvas (for students) with Nudge, which will automatically pull tasks from these platforms to their to-do list. Additionally, users will be able to view their weekly insights, which display their longest scrolling sessions by app, and their mood breakdown from scrolling sessions on specific apps. This will allow them to recognize patterns in their screen time habits and better understand the effect that mindlessly scrolling has on their mental health.
