Inspiration
The internet has given us unprecedented ways to connect, but somehow we've never felt more disconnected.
Social platforms optimize for engagement, not presence. Recommendation algorithms decide what we see, carefully edited content replaces authentic moments, and endless scrolling gradually takes away our curiosity about the real world.
We started wondering:
What if we built a social network that went in the opposite direction?
One that encourages people to experience the present instead of polishing the past, and to discover the world through genuine moments rather than algorithms.
What it does
Now is a social app centered around real-time sharing.
- No uploads. Every video must be recorded in the moment—no importing from your gallery.
- No recommendation algorithm. Instead of an endless personalized feed, you explore the world through a live map.
- See what people are experiencing right now. Jump between cities, neighborhoods, and countries to discover authentic moments as they happen.
The goal isn't to maximize screen time. It's to bring back curiosity, spontaneity, and a sense of human connection.
How we built it
We built Now around three core ideas:
- A camera-first experience that only allows live recording.
- A location-based map where every post appears at the place it was created.
- A lightweight backend that synchronizes live content and makes global exploration simple and immediate.
Every design decision was guided by one principle: reduce friction to authenticity.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest challenge wasn't technical—it was product design.
Most social apps rely heavily on recommendation algorithms because they're incredibly effective at keeping users engaged. Removing them meant we had to rethink how discovery should work.
Another challenge was encouraging authenticity while keeping the experience simple and enjoyable, without making users feel restricted.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that Now challenges assumptions about how social media should work.
Instead of chasing attention, it encourages presence.
Instead of consuming algorithmically selected content, users actively explore the world.
Instead of perfectly curated memories, it celebrates ordinary moments happening right now.
We believe authenticity can become the product itself.
What we learned
Building Now reminded us that technology doesn't always need to optimize for more engagement.
Sometimes the best products create space for people to slow down, stay curious, and reconnect with the real world.
We also learned that giving users agency—letting them choose where to explore instead of deciding for them—creates a very different relationship with content.
What's next for Now
Our vision is to become a real-time window into the world.
Next, we plan to:
- Add live communities around cities and events.
- Enable real-time interactions between people sharing the same moment.
- Build features that encourage local discovery and spontaneous connections.
- Continue exploring how technology can make people feel closer, not just more connected.
Because the world is much bigger than our feeds make it seem—and every moment happening right now is worth discovering.
