Inspiration

When I watched Josh's creator brief, it hit home. He described investors holding stocks alongside physical silver, real estate next to fixed income, with no single app to track it all. You're stuck bouncing between Robinhood, CoinGecko, Zillow, and a spreadsheet.

After inheriting money from the passing of close relatives, I wanted to invest intentionally. I hold an MSc in Finance and worked in investment banking, but the more I studied asset allocation, the less I bought the "just put it all in the S&P 500" line. I keep savings in a high-yield Revolut account, I'm exploring real estate, I follow crypto, I look at bonds and commodities. The tools haven't kept pace with how young investors actually allocate. Josh described exactly the product I've been wanting. So I built it.

What it does

Novus Wealth tracks 7 asset classes in one dashboard: stocks, crypto, real estate, bonds, commodities, cash & savings, and alternatives.

  • AI Portfolio Advisor: Chat with Claude Sonnet 4.5 using your actual holdings for personalised stress testing, rebalancing, and analysis
  • AI Document Import: Drop in a brokerage statement (PDF, Excel, CSV) and AI extracts every holding automatically
  • Real Estate Analytics: Mortgage, expenses, cap rate, cash on cash return, rental yield, net cash flow
  • Bond Amortisation: Coupon schedules, yield to maturity, payment tracking
  • Advanced Analytics: Sharpe ratio, correlation matrix, benchmark comparison vs S&P 500/Nasdaq/gold/Bitcoin, concentration alerts
  • Smart Suggestions: Flags concentration risk, missing asset classes, underperformance
  • Educational Explainers: Every metric is tappable with plain English explanations using your actual numbers

How we built it

The app is built with React Native and Expo, written entirely in TypeScript with zero compile errors. State management runs on Zustand with AsyncStorage for local persistence, meaning all portfolio data stays on the user's device for privacy.

For live pricing, we pull from three APIs on a five minute refresh cycle with caching: Yahoo Finance for stocks and ETFs, CoinGecko for crypto, and MetalPriceAPI for commodities and precious metals. Google Places handles real estate address autocomplete and validation. Asset logos load dynamically through the Clearbit API.

The AI features run on the Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4.5 API. What makes the advisor actually useful is that we inject the user's complete portfolio into every request: every holding, current value, allocation percentage, and asset class. So when someone asks "how would a recession affect me?" Claude responds with their specific positions and real dollar figures, not textbook answers.

Monetisation is handled through the RevenueCat SDK with a freemium model. The free tier covers up to 10 assets across all 7 asset classes with 3 AI advisor messages. Premium unlocks unlimited everything: AI advisor, advanced analytics, document import, and auto valuations. We set up two subscription tiers ($4.99 monthly, $39.99 annual) with entitlement gating throughout the app.

Challenges we ran into

The surprise challenge was everything outside the code. We spent so much time focused on building the product that we underestimated how involved the App Store submission process would be. Setting up the Apple Developer account, configuring certificates and provisioning profiles, linking RevenueCat with App Store Connect subscription keys, getting the bundle IDs aligned across EAS Build, TestFlight, and RevenueCat, it was a full pipeline we hadn't budgeted time for. We ended up calling Apple Developer Support directly to expedite our enrollment approval because we were racing the deadline. Lesson learned: budget as much time for deployment as you do for development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built this in five days, and honestly there were multiple moments where the scope felt impossible. But we didn't cut corners and we didn't give up. The thing we're most proud of is that Novus Wealth doesn't just work, it looks and feels like a real product. The UI is clean, the animations are smooth, every screen has been thought through. What started as a hackathon project, turned into an app we'd actually want to work on beyond this event.

What we learned

The best financial tools don't just show data, they teach. Every metric in Novus Wealth is tappable with an explanation using your real numbers. The other lesson: Josh's brief ("track everything") was deceptively broad. The hard part wasn't connecting APIs, it was making seven completely different asset classes feel coherent in one interface.

What's next for Novus Wealth

Beta testing with investors at London Business School first. Then: broker integrations via Plaid for auto syncing, automated property valuations via Zillow and RentCast, premium data from Polygon.io and Morningstar, multi currency support, estate planning, a web dashboard, and tax reporting.

The vision: one source of truth for your entire financial life.
