Novid In Action

Inspiration

Unfortunately, some of our family members contracted COVID-19. After seeing the struggle that they went through, we wanted to take this opportunity to spread knowledge and tips for best practices to our users in order to help curb this global pandemic.

What it does

Our application allows users to interact with chatbot Novid, which can both offer facts about COVID-19 and advice on how to stay safe.

How we built it

We used Dialogflow to build and train Novid, which we integrated into our React application using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, as well as Node technologies.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges integrating Dialogflow with React, but we were able to resolve it by implementing a third party integration tool called Kommunicate into our code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we successfully integrated Dialogflow with React, which allowed us to create a fully functional chatbot on a web application. As first year college students with no experience with prior hackathons, we are proud to have successfully created an application from scratch and hope to use this experience as a stepping stone for future hackathons.

What we learned

React, Dialogflow, and Kommunicate were all completely new technologies to us, and we learned how to effectively use and combine them to create a fully functional application. We also learned how to work efficiently under time constraints, as well as how to work well within a team of diverse people.

What's next for NOVID

For now, Novid functions as a user-friendly conversation tool about COVID-19. We are looking forward to expanding Novid's knowledge base using integration with up-and-coming healthcare APIs to provide our users with a more comprehensive and applicable experience.
