Moving to the United States, whether as a student, worker, or immigrant, means colliding with a thousand invisible systems no one explains. From how credit works to why apartments demand co-signers, or what a W-2 actually is, most newcomers have learn through expensive mistakes, scattered Reddit threads, and well-meaning but outdated advice from family. We wanted to build a system that treats American life as a system that can actually be understood.

What it does

NovAI is an AI-powered navigation console for the first 1,000 days in America. A short calibration captures the essentials like visa, state, life stage, and goals, then drops the user straight into a structured checklist wizard that breaks down housing, money, work, healthcare, taxes, and social life into clear and concrete milestones. A conversational copilot answers follow-up questions in plain language, with cultural context baked in.

How we built it

We built NovAI on Lovable for the frontend and app scaffolding, with Supabase as the backend for data, auth, and edge functions. The conversational copilot is powered by Featherless AI running Qwen 2.5 72B.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was scope. American life is enormous, and we didn't want to bury users in archetypes, system maps, and translator tools before they could ask a single question. We had to streamline the flow, collapse calibration directly into the checklist wizard, and keep the tone calm and culturally aware.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A genuinely calm interface in a category dominated by anxious, form-heavy products. A unified copilot and checklist flow that replaces a maze of separate tools with one coherent path, with multilingual support and a personal to-do list from day one.

What we learned

Newcomers don't need more information. They need fewer, better-sequenced decisions. The best onboarding is almost invisible, and trust depends as much on tone as on accuracy.

What's next for NovAI

Deeper personalization tied to visa milestones, document-aware help for leases and USCIS notices, and expanded state-specific coverage. Eventually, proactive nudges around tax season, renewals, and open enrollment.
