Inspiration

Struggling to talk to friends that speak different languages was the real inspiration. We have all experienced language barriers, and with trying to integrate AI into everything it got me thinking, what else should we integrate into apps, and translation seems like a really obvious thing to integrate.

What it does

It is a messaging program that will automatically translate between preferred languages. A user simply types their message in their preferred language and all users they were trying to talk to will see the translated message instead.

How we built it

We tried out several different API's for translating text including google cloud and the one we went with translateAPI. We went through many iterations originally we used deno for ts and running the backend but swiftly switched to node js. In the end our stack was HTML and CSS, Express JS, Node JS, and translateAPI.

Challenges we ran into

We had 2/3rds of our team new to coding, making it hard to balance learning and actually working, as well as some problems with certain API's having character limits so low it wasn't plausible to use them long term

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have made an app/website with all the difficulty we've been through, although being intimidated at first, we managed to pull through and work together, sharing our last few brain cells to code a a safe translator to talk to friends with. We are also proud that we all managed to learn something.

What we learned

We learned how to use API's/what they were, as well as how to use ai in our code and we refined our skills in the designing department. Some of our team learned how to make their first website. Needless to say we all learned something.

What's next for NOVA - Chat Rooms

NOVA will next improve on voice, and AI moderation to make chatting safer. We will add features like customizable rooms and better security, all while keeping things simple. Our goal is To create a space where everyone can communicate freely and securely, no matter what they speak, whether it be French, German or potentially sign language.
