Inspiration

We were just regular high school students who went about their lives. Until we came upon a major worldwide issue: Food wastage. This hit us really hard as we came from India where a huge percentage of the population is under the poverty line, most without access to food. As determined students we wanted to build something that could potentially solve a small part of this issue.

What it does

This app allows users to donate and request surplus items. For donations, people with these surplus items can enter what the item, a short description, along with the quantity on the site. For requesting, people who need specific items can browse through a page and enter their name for the items they would like to request.

How we built it

Using Node.js, HTML, and CSS we built this site from the ground up. It features different pages for both donation and browsing.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges that we ran into was getting the user donations to appear correctly on the browsing page. This took around 2 days to fully solve and implement. Another minor issue we had was trying to make the UI as user friendly as possible. This took a lot of back and forth over multiple days to get correct.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the site as a whole. After many tireless days we are proud to have a fully functioning and good looking site, that solves a major societal issue.

What we learned

A major thing that we learned was great things take time to come together. This was a huge theme throughout the entire process of making the app. We especially learned the virtue of patience, as our app had many issues some taking what felt like an eternity to fix.

What's next for NourishLink

We want to be able to possibly connect this app to local food pantry's and soup kitchens. This is in effort to maximize the reach of our app, making sure that the people in need have proper access to food.
