Inspiration
We were inspired to build this project by highschool. As freshmen, the larger workload and fast-paced nature of 9th grade is really draining. School-provided planners and websites (Schoology) were too disorganized and non-student friendly as helpful information such as assignment completion and class format were nonexistent.
What it does
Our hackathon project is Nourish. As our tag line suggests, it is a supply for growth...with a plan. It has a dynamic, editable schedule, to-do list, resources (tips and websites), and what matters to us stressed young adults the most: a calculator for math and grades.
How we built it
Riya has been in a hackathon before and has knowledge on HTML and CSS (web design basics), guiding me along the process. Nancy has not attended before and has background in Java, so there was a lot of new topics discussed in the Web Development class. We used HTML tables and input methods to add editable tables (columns dividing fields). The calculator was created by taking all of the buttons with different values that can be activated on mouse-clicks. It is displayed in a standard calculator format on the website. The To-Do is also editable, but is a more detailed plan of each assignment. Little notes and reminders are useful when the title of the assignment doesn't remind you which questions are incomplete or need more research upon. The last component are the Resources. We decided to add some things we have found helpful over years of procrastination and studying that promote focus and review topics.
Challenges we ran into
Google was our best friend. Nancy learned HTML today off of the web and struggled with formatting the tables. There were a lot of syntax error and img/txt/table positioning problems. We ended up using the style css a bunch to give specific fields. We also realized that we didn't preplan the fact that we'd need a Server/Client system to keep the Client side updating and running (alerting the user about their assignments); there was also the possibility to use local Storage in the future.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned more about web design! Nancy had never built a website before and it was exciting. We created a pretty aesthetic memey website and had fun.
What we learned
This really opened our eyes to hackathons and deadlines. There is time to learn, but not much to improvise. You have to have a plan to begin with in order to not stumble into a disorganized mess.
What's next for Nourish
We would like to make it locally based in terms of saving the state of the schedules. This way the user to use it on personal devices. If this works out well, we would use it for our own homework.
