Inspiration
Driven by our own experience as college students, we recognized the struggle of college students to balance the high-cost tuition with balanced and healthy meals. There has been a huge gap in food accessibility for college students, and we were motivated to create a solution to this problem to shape a better future. Our team, the DEVAS, set out to create a website similar to Feeding America, but specifically for college students.
What it does
Nourish Net is an intuitive platform aimed at addressing food insecurity among college students nationwide. Our platform is more than just a website: it's a movement towards a future ensuring that no college students ever has to deal with hunger or food shortage during their academic journey.
How we built it
We created a website on Visual Studio Code using ReactJS, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We used GitHub for smooth collaboration between team members and keep each other up-to-date about all the code changes
Challenges we ran into
One of our members had trouble installing Git and using ReactJS, so she wrote the content for the pages, created the logo, color palette, and got stock images to use and the other team members created an amazing website, set up the GitHub repository, and got more stock images to use for the website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we worked together and were able to put our minds into this project. We initially had a lot of ideas for the project, but it was great seeing our progression of not really knowing what we'd do, to creating a fully functional website. We celebrate not only the final result, but also the entire process that brought us to this phase.
What we learned
Through this project, we did not only learn technical skills of building a website with ReactJS, but we also gained invaluable experience in teamwork. We used our individual strengths to be able to create and finish the project effectively. This project also helped us understand the importance of team collaboration and the key to clear communication between the team members.
What's next for Nourish Net: An Online Food Relief Network
- While our website serves as a central hub for information about college food insecurity, we also want to spotlight existing food distribution programs at partner colleges such as UMass Boston and UHCL.
- In the future, we would love to implement an interactive map that shows nearby food pantries and partner colleges, which will help the students easily find the resources.
- We also have the idea of implementing a Student Forum, in which the students have a chance to connect with each other and share their experience, tips, and low-cost meals.
