Inspiration
Food is essential for life but at the same time, not all of us maintain a healthy relationship with it.
Global eating disorder prevalence has increased from 3.4% to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018.
Which means that a lot of us, have gone through the phase of either eating a lot or not eating at all. Both of which are quite detrimental to our health.
To recover from such disorders people take drastic steps as reducing extreme amount of calories at once or eating a lot at once. But it usually ends up in failure, and people tend to go back to their previous eating habits.(speaking from personal experience)
What they should have done instead was to take smaller steps, and make little changes in their diets sporadically which would have helped them get used to the changes. Unfortunately, not many know about it and hence feel stuck in a vicious cycle.
Hence, we present NOURISH-MEND.
What it does
NOURISH-MEND takes in the basic information like, age, weight, height, gender etc. and calculates your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). Based on that, and the required calories intake for a normal weight at the user's age and height, NOURISH-MEND will provide a monthly calorie plan for the same whilst decreasing/increasing calories depending on whether the user suffers from Binge Eating Disorder or Anorexia Nervosa respectively. Also, In order to build a healthy relationship with food, NOURISH-MEND will provide a list of recipes that the user can make for each meal of that day everyday while following the calories plan. NOURISH-MEND also takes care of a person's diet restrictions and can suggest recipes adhering to those restrictions.
How we built it
We have created a website and used HTML,CSS, Javascript, Bootstrap for the front-end. We made the backend using Django and Python and for storing information and databases we have used sqlite. We have used EDAMAM API for providing the recipes within the calories requirements.
Challenges we ran into
- Finding an API that suited our needs, and after finding one, it was difficult for us to understand how it worked because of our limited knowledge in API.
- Time crunch.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Coming up with an idea that is relatable to everyone.
- Making a working prototype for the same.
What's next for NOURISH-MEND
- We would like to provide a section for users to add in their daily food intake, and helping them calculate calories based on the ingredients they used.
- We also want to include methods to help other types of eating disorders as well.
