Inspiration

The inspiration behind Nourish stems from the concern for addressing food insecurity among university students and promoting better nutrition. Recognizing the growing problem of inadequate access to nutritious meals on campuses, we sought to develop a web application that focuses on providing students with practical solutions to overcome food insecurity and improve their overall well-being.

What it does

Nourish is a mobile-first web application designed to tackle food insecurity by offering personalized menus and recipes tailored to students' nutritional needs. Users can create menus consisting of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the option to generate AI-generated recipes for each meal slot. The application also features a food bank, where users can explore a comprehensive list of food items categorized by food groups to create their own recipes. Each recipe and food item is accompanied by details such as nutritional information, food safety impact, and tips for enhancing nutritional value.

How we built it

We built Nourish using a combination of modern web development technologies and techniques. The frontend of the application was developed using responsive design principles, ensuring optimal user experience on mobile devices. We utilized Next.js and many libraries to create an intuitive and visually appealing interface, and to create the backend too. The application was deployed on a scalable cloud infrastructure to ensure reliability and performance.

Also, we used ChatGPT to ensure an AI experience.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of Nourish, we encountered several challenges that pushed us to find innovative solutions. One significant challenge was integrating the AI-powered menu generation feature seamlessly into the application. Additionally, curating a comprehensive food bank with up-to-date nutritional information and establishing a user-friendly interface proved to be a complex task. However, through collaborative problem-solving and persistent effort, we were able to overcome these challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in successfully creating a mobile-first web application that addresses the pressing issue of food insecurity among university students. Our team's collaborative efforts resulted in an intuitive and user-friendly interface that seamlessly combines nutrition-focused features with AI-generated recommendations. We are proud of the comprehensive food bank we developed, which allows users to access a wide range of food options and explore their nutritional details. Additionally, our accomplishment lies in leveraging technology to empower students to make informed choices about their meals and ultimately enhance their overall well-being.

What we learned

The development of Nourish provided us with valuable insights into the intersection of technology, nutrition, and food security. We deepened our understanding of the challenges faced by students in accessing nutritious meals and the potential impact of technology in addressing these issues. We also developed skills in collaborative problem-solving, effective communication, and agile project management.

What's next for Nourish

We finished most of the UX/UI, but we did not finish the app. We look forward to continue the project and promote it in college communities, so they can prevent food insecurity and know more about the topic.
