Inspiration

With over 5.7 million Haitians facing acute food insecurity, we were moved to build a system that could enable better coordination and transparency in food aid efforts. We were inspired by how grassroots NGOs and volunteers do their best with limited tools—and we wanted to give them a digital platform that reflects their dedication. “NouriLakay” means Nourishment at Home in Haitian Creole, and it captures our vision perfectly.

What it does

NouriLakay is a prototype platform designed to help NGOs coordinate food aid distribution across Haiti. The system allows:

  • Organizations to register and apply to deliver food to high-need zones
  • Admins to approve aid efforts and monitor them via a live heatmap
  • Real-time tracking of promised vs delivered aid
  • A shared “Inform” board where NGOs can post updates from the ground

While the backend is not yet implemented, the full frontend experience simulates the workflow.

How we built it

  • Framework: React.js
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS
  • Mapping: Leaflet.js with OpenStreetMap
  • State: Local component and global mock state for demo

This is a frontend-only prototype aimed at showcasing the core user experience and flow.

Challenges we ran into

  • Replacing Google Maps with a free and open-source solution (Leaflet + OSM)
  • Designing for usability with minimal data while keeping the UX intuitive
  • Making sure the Haitian cultural identity was reflected in the brand and layout
  • Structuring a real-time coordination flow without a backend

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a meaningful, mission-driven prototype from scratch
  • Developed a working UI for admin/org role-based workflows
  • Integrated a live map interface with a delta heatmap for tracking unmet needs
  • Created a strong brand and theme based on Haiti’s flag and values

What we learned

  • The importance of culturally rooted design in humanitarian tech
  • How frontend prototypes can effectively communicate complex workflows
  • The value of open-source tools for accessibility and sustainability
  • How to transform a flood aid app into a localized food security tool

What's next for NouriLakay — Together, We Nourish Haiti

  • Build a full backend with database and authentication
  • Add real-time IPC food security data and AI-driven need scoring
  • Implement multilingual support (Haitian Creole, French, English)
  • Create mobile-friendly offline support for field use
  • Partner with local NGOs and global aid networks for pilot testing

Together, We Nourish Haiti.
