Inspiration

We were inspired by our own experiences shopping for skincare products that turned out to be harmful for our skin or exacerbated skin conditions.

What it does

nouri is a Chrome extension that accompanies you on your online shopping journey and alerts you if it detects harmful or irritant ingredients in cosmetics. It allows you to get customized recommendations and alerts based on your user profile, take a quiz to find out your skin type, and save your favorite products to your user profile.

How we built it

We used Figma for prototyping and then HTML/CSS for the front-end. For the back-end, we would use Airtable as our ingredient database and its API to use it in our extension directly.

Challenges we ran into

Half our team disappeared halfway throughout the hackathon so we were forced to re-assess the scope of our project. After that, we did not have enough time left to implement a database and an ingredient search script.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Joyce : managing to complete and submit a project as a 2-people team !
Nadia : after the teammate that was in charge of front-end disappeared, I had to implement it myself. I hadn't done front-end in years and I was not looking forward to it, but it ended up being alright and I was able to almost perfectly recreate our intended design.

What we learned

Joyce : I learned how to better collaborate with developers and how to speak each other's language.
Nadia : re-learned HTML and CSS, as well as a bit about the design process !

Business viability

Our main business model is building partnerships with reputable brands that are known for using skin-safe ingredients, and recommending their products through our recommender feature. Additionally, we would like to create a subscription box service to allow users to sample products from aforementioned partner brands. Lastly, we would earn commissions through referral links that our users can use for other services that also promote safe skincare for all !

What's next for nouri

The next step development-wise is to implement our database and ingredient search script ! As a product, we would like to add additional features to make our extension even easier to use !
