Notionwell — From Notes to Knowledge

Inspiration

Students already have plenty of study material—lecture notes, slides, PDFs, and textbooks. The problem is what happens after that.

Creating flashcards and quizzes manually takes time, and when exams approach, students often end up cramming without knowing which topics they actually need to revise.

We wanted to build something that could take the material a student already has and turn it into a personalized learning system, rather than just another AI chatbot.

That's how Notionwell was born.

From Notes to Knowledge.

What Notionwell Does

Notionwell transforms study material into interactive learning resources using AI.

A student can provide their notes, and Notionwell can generate:

  • 🧠 AI-powered flashcards
  • 📝 Practice quizzes
  • 💡 Simplified explanations
  • 📊 Learning and mastery insights
  • 🎯 Weak-topic identification
  • 🔄 Adaptive revision through spaced repetition

The important part is that Notionwell doesn't stop after generating content.

It creates a learning loop:

Generate → Practice → Measure → Identify Weaknesses → Review → Improve

When a student struggles with a concept, it can be prioritized for earlier review. Concepts that are already well understood can be reviewed less frequently.

This helps shift students away from "What should I study?" toward "What do I need to study next?"

How We Built It

We designed Notionwell as a web-based learning platform with a focus on a simple and intuitive student experience.

The application combines an AI-powered content generation layer with an interactive study interface. Study material is processed and transformed into structured flashcards and quiz questions that students can immediately practice.

The study experience tracks how students interact with individual cards, including whether a concept was difficult or easy. This information is then used by the spaced-repetition logic to determine when cards should return for review.

We also designed the dashboard around actionable information rather than overwhelming students with statistics. It focuses on things such as:

  • Cards due for review
  • Overall mastery
  • Study streak
  • Recent study decks
  • Weak topics
  • Progress over time

The project was developed, tested, and deployed as a working web application.

Challenges

One of our biggest challenges was making AI-generated study material genuinely useful rather than simply generating random questions from the input.

Educational content can be highly unstructured, so we had to think carefully about how information should be transformed into concise flashcards and meaningful quiz questions.

Another challenge was designing the adaptive learning experience. We wanted the system to do more than simply record whether a student answered correctly. The student's performance needed to influence what they would see next.

We also had to balance ambition with hackathon constraints. There are many features that could be added to an AI learning platform, but we prioritized the core experience and focused on making the important workflow functional.

What We Learned

Building Notionwell taught us that creating a useful AI product involves much more than connecting an application to an LLM.

We learned about:

  • Designing structured AI-generated outputs
  • Building feedback loops around AI responses
  • Creating adaptive user experiences
  • Applying spaced-repetition concepts to learning
  • Designing dashboards around actionable insights
  • Balancing functionality, UX, and development time
  • Turning an idea into a deployable product

Most importantly, we learned that AI becomes much more useful when it is part of a continuous workflow rather than being the entire product.

What's Next

Notionwell is only the beginning.

Future versions could include:

  • More advanced spaced-repetition algorithms
  • Voice-based answering
  • Personalized study plans
  • Collaborative deck sharing
  • Mobile applications
  • Multilingual learning
  • Exam-specific preparation modes
  • Deeper knowledge maps showing relationships between concepts
  • Long-term learning analytics

Our long-term vision is for Notionwell to become a personal learning system that continuously adapts to each student's strengths, weaknesses, and learning progress.

Instead of spending more time preparing to study, students can spend that time actually learning.
