Due to the current lockdown situation, teens are currently facing anxiety and stress. We have experienced anxiety and stress in our lives, which inspired us to create a project to help others cope with this. The techniques of large social media companies, which use notifications with sounds to attract users, inspired us to utilize similar tactics.

What it does

Our solution was to create a notification system. Throughout the day, the user would receive notifications including messages to help boost morale and spirit levels. Furthermore, our notifications are accompanied with a certain sound which is proven to help increase dopamine in teenagers and adults.

How we built it

We used the programming language python to create our prototype of a notification system with different messages. We were successfully able to create the pop up messages on screen with randomized messages. We edited a sound that we liked and decided to use it as our notification “ring”.

Challenges we ran into

While programming, we ran into the problem of some messages not fitting into our text box. To solve this, one of our team mates suggested we use the “\n” feature in python to create a new line. We tried this out and our problem was solved! In addition, when we were trying to put a link onto our message box, the link didn’t work. Therefore, we came up with the idea to create a tiny url so that it would be easier for users to type in the link to go to that video/site.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to work together effectively to create an idea that solves a problem. We didn’t come across any difficulties while working together. In addition, we’re proud of the functioning code and notifications.

What we learned

We learned to work together efficiently in an online environment.

What's next for NotifsUp

With more time, we would improve the sound that goes along with the notification, and maybe add a variety of sounds that the user can choose from.
