Inspiration

Tax notices can be intimidating even when the underlying issue is straightforward. We wanted to build something that helps an ordinary taxpayer move from “What does this notice mean?” to “What exactly should I do next?” NoticeLens was created around that simple idea: make complex GST and Income Tax notices easier to understand and act on.

What it does

NoticeLens turns a tax notice into a structured action plan. Users can upload a notice, understand why they received it, identify important dates and amounts, see what documents or actions are required, and track their progress.

It also provides source-linked information so users can trace important facts back to the original notice, an Ask My Notice experience for questions about the document, notice history, and a concise brief that can be shared with a tax professional.

How we built it

NoticeLens is built as a web application with a product-focused interface designed around a simple flow: Receive → Understand → Verify → Prepare → Respond → Remember.

The application uses document extraction and structured notice intelligence to identify important information from uploaded documents. We designed the analysis around the notice itself and a structured NoticeLens knowledge base rather than relying on a generic chatbot to invent answers.

RevenueCat is integrated for subscription management, allowing premium functionality to be unlocked through a real purchase and entitlement flow.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was making notice analysis useful without turning the product into a generic AI chatbot. Tax notices contain dates, amounts, references, legal sections and requested documents that need to remain connected to their original source.

We also had to design a subscription experience that felt like a natural part of the product rather than an unrelated payment screen, while keeping the core experience useful for free users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of turning a traditionally intimidating document into a clear, navigable workflow rather than simply generating a long summary.

The combination of a structured Notice Room, action plan, source-linked facts, original-document access, Ask My Notice, history and Notice Brief gives users a complete path from receiving a notice to preparing their next step.

What we learned

We learned that solving a complex problem does not necessarily require adding more features. The most valuable part of NoticeLens is the way information is organized: separating facts from explanations, connecting important information to its source, and turning understanding into concrete actions.

We also learned that trust is especially important when building products around financial and tax information.

What's next for NoticeLens

Next, we want to expand verified coverage across more GST and Income Tax notice types, improve document and OCR handling, make source references even more precise, and expand the Notice Brief and reminder workflow.

Longer term, NoticeLens could become a personal tax-notice workspace that helps users understand, prepare and keep track of their notices while making collaboration with their tax professional easier.
