Inspiration
We wanted to rethink how people discover places and experiences in their city. So much of discovery today revolves around trends, influencers, and what's popular online, while personal recommendations from friends and local communities can get lost in group chats, saved posts, and screenshots. We wanted to create a space where people could share the places they genuinely love, discover hidden gems, and inspire each other's next adventures.
What it does
Noted! is a community-driven discovery app that helps users find authentic local experiences through the people around them. Users can explore an interactive city map, create digital postcards featuring photos and personal notes, and organize their favorite places into creative scrapbooks. They can save recommendations, document their adventures, and share experiences with friends. Noted! makes discovering a city feel more personal, visual, and connected.
How we built it
We approached Noted! with a focus on combining functional technology with an engaging, creative user experience. We designed an image-first interface inspired by visual discovery platforms and digital scrapbooks, using a warm, editorial aesthetic. Our planned technology stack includes React Native and Expo for the mobile experience, TypeScript for development, React Native Maps for location-based discovery, and Expo Image Picker for adding photos. We prioritized creating a cohesive prototype that demonstrates the core user journey, with backend services and additional integrations as future development opportunities.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was narrowing down our ideas into a focused product. We wanted Noted! to include maps, recommendations, postcards, scrapbooks, and social features, but implementing too much at once could make the experience feel overwhelming. We had to think carefully about which features best communicated our vision and how to make the interface intuitive without sacrificing creativity. Balancing our original ideas with the time constraints of a hackathon also pushed us to prioritize the most important parts of the user experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of turning an idea into a cohesive product concept with a distinct visual identity and a clear purpose. Noted! brings together location-based discovery and personal storytelling in a way that encourages people to share more than just a place's name or rating. We're especially proud of the postcard and scrapbook concepts because they make recommendations feel personal and give users a creative way to document their experiences.
What we learned
We learned how important it is to balance creativity with feasibility when building a product under time constraints. Having many exciting ideas is only the beginning; the real challenge is deciding which ones work together to solve a specific problem. We also learned to think beyond functionality and consider how visual design, personal context, and ease of use can shape the way people interact with technology.
What's next for Noted!
We want to continue developing Noted! into a fully functional discovery platform. Future improvements include implementing user accounts, persistent storage, collaborative scrapbooks, and more personalized recommendations. We also hope to expand the map experience, introduce community discovery features, and explore AI-assisted recommendations that help users find places based on their interests and preferences. Ultimately, we want Noted! to make exploring a new city feel less overwhelming and help people build meaningful connections through shared experiences.
