Inspiration
I was continually frustrated by the inability to search for PDF content within Notion, so I thought I would make a solution.
What it does
NoteButler is simple. You connect it to Notion, it finds yours PDFs, extracts the text, creates an AI summary, and adds this summary back to the Notion page, below the PDF.
How I built it
This is Python web app. As it is mainly backend tool, it was largely about APIs and moving content.
Challenges I ran into
The actually functionality wasn't too difficult to create, but it was the little things that took all the time. Setting up, async tasks, managing free trials with a limited number of AI tokens, etc.
What I learned
I learnt a heap. This is the first web app I have released. The learnings are endless, but the two key ones are: identifying the test support tools (Notion, OpenAI, celery, etc) and ensuring app efficiency where I don't hit the database or APIs more than needed.
