As students, one of the biggest challenges we run into daily is effective note taking. We wanted to take fast and efficient notes without having to type it all out or tediously write everything on a sheet of paper. As of right now, there is no existing software that is designed to transcribe lengthy ideating sessions or large amounts of information at once. Most existing products are optimized for virtual meeting notetaking, or for shorter basic functions such as searching or texting. With our app, we can easily take long, hassle-free notes and automatically send it to email for later review.

What it does

The Notation app listens for voice input from the user and detects what they are saying, and records it as text on the screen. The text can then be sent by email by the user, wherever they would like it to go. It is accessible and easy to use, as the user can download the program and use it from their mobile phone.

How we built it

We built our application using the Android SDK and Java. Android XML was used for the frontend and Java was used for the backend and implementing features such as the speech-to-text and email.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we faced was that there were initial problems with downloading the application on a phone, so we used an emulator for testing. As well, nobody on our team was very comfortable with technologies such as the Android SDK and Java, so we were forced to relearn it. We also had to design a simple and intuitive UI which users would feel comfortable using without being intrusive to someone's workflow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the fact that were able to complete the application and achieve the goals we set out with. We learned a lot about new technologies, and the importance of time management.

What we learned

Although some of our team members had prior experience with the Android SDK and Java, we were forced to learn/relearn a lot of it. We learned the importance of time management, as we found it difficult to balance school and extracurriculars all while having to devote a lot of time to the project.

What's next for Notation

We want to improve the UI for a smoother note-taking experience, and implement automatically syncing your notes to the cloud. As well, we want to make editing notes easier. Furthermore, we are hoping to publish this application on the Google Play Store.
