As two people who have worked with children and individuals with disabilities, we know how hard it can be to get accurate and appropriate information to those who need it most. This inspired us to create a book for children during this time of high stress and anxiety to give them a calm, educational understanding of what is going on in the world. We aimed to provide a thought-provoking, creative piece that spoke to and inspired children.
Though we loved creating this, one challenge was the need to balance creating the story, while still working in the community. The illustrator continued to work with individuals with Traumatic Brain Injuries during this process. Though this added a layer of stress to the time aspect of completing the project, it also served as a creative outlet to relieve stress during these uncertain times.
In this process, we gained new prospective of the pandemic by interviewing children, parents, and teachers about their experiences. We also furthered our insight into the creative process of writing a book and learned new skills within illustration, story creation, and editing. We hope to continue to use and further these skills by writing books about/for underrepresented populations, such as individuals with physical disabilities, cognitive disabilities, mental health challenges, and low socio-economic status.
Thank you for this opportunity and consideration.
