Most ridiculous category and IBS woes

What it does

The Not A Party Pooper device automatically detects gasses produced when defecating. Once our device detects someone is pooping it uses a Google Nest Mini to play soothing and relaxing music to ease the bathroom goers fears of being heard. Our device also changes the color of the lights to a nice calming color to transport their mind away from the bathroom and into Nirvana. Finally, our device activates a relay switch to turn on a fan or spray an electric air freshener.

How we built it

We used an Arduino Uno with a MQ-2 sensor to detect methane and hydrogen gas (farts). Once the sensor reaches a certain detection threshold it acts as an external Spotify remote to begin to play the music. We used IFTTT to control the color of the smart lights. Finally, we had a simple relay switch that would turn on the fan/air freshener.

Challenges we ran into

Using the Google Nest Mini to play music using the Spotify API is uber hard.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we created a somewhat comedic device that if refined could have an actual practical affect.

What we learned

It was my first time doing anything hardware related at all so I was able to learn a lot about that specifically the Arduino. It was also the first time I actually tried to communicate with my IoT devices and I'd say we did so pretty successfully.
