Inspiration

Choosing a career path is one of the biggest challenges students and early professionals face. Most people rely on generic career quizzes, scattered learning resources, and manual planning, making the journey confusing and overwhelming. We wanted to build a platform that acts like an intelligent career companion—one that understands a user's skills, goals, and progress while providing personalized guidance every step of the way.

This idea led to Northstar, an AI-powered career navigation platform that helps users assess themselves, discover suitable career paths, build missing skills, prepare for interviews, strengthen their portfolio, and stay motivated through gamification.

What it does

Northstar provides an end-to-end career growth experience through multiple integrated modules:

  • Career Assessment to understand strengths, interests, and preferences.
  • Career Twin that predicts career matches, growth potential, and personalized recommendations.
  • Learning Roadmap with structured milestones and progress tracking.
  • Interview Preparation with categorized practice questions and confidence scores.
  • Portfolio Analyzer that evaluates resumes, GitHub, LinkedIn, and portfolio readiness while suggesting actionable improvements.
  • Skill Matrix to visualize competency levels across technical domains.
  • Achievements & Gamification using XP, badges, streaks, and milestones to encourage consistent learning.
  • Profile Dashboard that combines progress, analytics, and personalized insights into one place.

How we built it

The application was built as a modern web platform using React, TypeScript, and Vite for the frontend. The interface was designed with reusable components and responsive layouts to deliver a clean and intuitive user experience.

AI-generated insights power several modules, including career recommendations, portfolio analysis, interview guidance, and personalized learning suggestions. The platform combines assessment data, user progress, and skill information to generate tailored recommendations instead of static advice.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was creating a unified experience across multiple career development modules while keeping the interface simple and consistent. Designing meaningful progress tracking, skill visualization, and roadmap generation required careful planning.

Another challenge was balancing rich functionality with usability so that users could easily navigate between assessments, career planning, interview preparation, and portfolio improvement without feeling overwhelmed.
