Inspiration

The inspiration behind this project is to allow students/faculty access to incidents occurring off or near campus. Reports on Northridge Notices span from animal sightings, traffic accidents, or even broken bathrooms. This project was made in mind to students at CSUN who post online about complaints they have over broken infrastructure or interesting animal sightings they may have encountered. With the additional reports which allow city officials to view and send updates, to keep people in Northridge in the loop with any updates.

What it does

What Northridge Notices does, is allow people to create sighting reports of events they encounter on or off campus. This notifies every User and city workers/campus faculty who may also be made aware of accident reports which need repair. It allows Users to pinpoint where certain events are occurring and view recent reported circumstances real time. Our project is not deployed live, but all the functionalities remain workable.

How we built it

We built a web app with React and Vite, with an interactive campus map powered by Leaflet and MapLibre on Esri map tiles. The demo runs on sample reports and announcements, so the whole experience works right in the browser.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was narrowing down our original idea because it was becoming too broad and difficult to manage. Initially, we considered creating a platform for an entire city, but we decided to focus on something closer to our own experiences: our school and the surrounding Northridge community. This helped us create a more focused and practical project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of our favorite accomplishments that we are especially proud of is successfully integrating events into a map. This feature allows students to see where events are happening and makes it easier for them to discover activities and stay connected with their community. This was also the key feature of our product, which brought our initial idea to life.

What we learned

In this project we learned a lot about how to work in a team and how a development workflow works. Since we had members at different levels of experience, we were able to teach each other how to start in a team development environment, how to organize project assets and files, as well as establish roles and responsibilities. All while communicating with each other in a professional simulated environment.

What's next for Northridge Notices

In the future for Northridge Notices, we want to incorporate a mobile version, which we originally had, so that people have a more local version of the product rather than a web based version. We would also like to incorporate more schools, cities, and even a partnership with the local governments to create that community-city relationship.
