Inspiration
Small merchants across Latin America lose sales and waste hours chasing unpaid invoices. Meanwhile, millions of Latin Americans in the US want to pay family businesses back home, but cross-border payment options are clunky. We're building the bridge: conversational AI plus PayPal, inside the WhatsApp chats merchants already use every day.
What it does
Nortex Pay AI is a Spanish-speaking AI agent (Nicaraguan voseo) that lives in WhatsApp. A merchant types or says "cobrale $50 a Juan por la factura 123" and the agent creates a PayPal invoice or payment link and sends it to the customer. It also watches for overdue invoices and sends polite, personalized collection reminders automatically. When PayPal confirms a payment via webhooks, the invoice is reconciled as paid in Nortex — the SaaS for small businesses (billing, inventory, payroll) the agent plugs into.
How we built it
A Node.js/TypeScript service integrating the PayPal REST platform (Orders v2, Invoices API, Webhooks) running against the PayPal sandbox, plus an LLM-powered conversational agent, connected to Nortex's backend (WhatsApp commerce, catalog and orders APIs). Public code at https://github.com/Noahstark23/nortex-paypal-ai (MIT).
Challenges we ran into
Designing for merchants who are not technical — every interaction must work from a single WhatsApp message.
